Birds vote with their beaks
Hungry robins flocked to the branches of our Red Jewel® Crabapple trees on a snowy January day. They tugged the bright red, beak-sized apples from the branches of this tree whose fruits are the most persistent of all the cultivars we grow. Fruits spared by the birds sparkle right into early spring, when clouds of fragrant, pink-tinged white flowers take center stage.
This time of year, only a few cultivars sport colorful fruit that provides winter interest and food for hungry wildlife. While the birds voted with their beaks to name Red Jewel® Crabapple their favorite winter dining establishment, they also feasted on Golden Raindrops®, Sugar Tyme®, Firebird® and Adirondack Crabapples.
