Cascading branches of wisteria blooms hint of romance and mystery as they burst forth in the spring. Their long racemes of blue, purple, pink or white creep softly and relentlessly to scale walls and accent arches. Their prolific blooms and leafy vines frame windows and views, softening architectural elements as they artfully hide a garden’s sharp edges.

Purple trusses of wisteria blossoms create a welcoming entrance by embracing window and back porch entry of the century-old farmhouse at Lonesomeville, a private garden in Portland, Oregon. Prolific Wisteria is available in #5 containers to create the same effect in your own landscape project. You’ll have to search elsewhere for the vintage farmhouse.

Opulent cascades of white wisteria blooms frame a south-facing Palladian window and soften the appearance of weathered red brick. You can create the same effect by planting Wisteria sinsensis ‘Longissima alba,’ available in tree form in #5 containers. Availability of a structure as beautiful as this one is less likely. As far as we know, the Georgian revival mansion at Filoli is one of a kind. This sprawling garden estate is located southwest of San Francisco and is lovingly preserved by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Wisteria blooms smother a garden arbor at the Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens in Woodland, Washington. Wisteria and lilacs bloom at the same time in this treasured garden estate created by lilac hybridizer Hulda Klager. Try our Prolific Wisteria for a similar effect. The long racemes of Macrobotrys Wisteria will drape even longer from arbor or trellis. If softer colors are preferred, try Pink Ice Wisteria.
