Siebold’s Magnolia (Magnolia sieboldii) is among the loveliest of the species magnolias. Throughout May and June, translucent white petals unfold to reveal a bouquet of delicate bright red stamens perched atop a maroon center. Additional flowers appear sporadically through the summer months, and are followed by egg-shaped fruits that turn carmine in the fall, in bright contrast to the golden yellow foliage.

This understory tree is found in China, Japan and Korea, and is well adapted to planting in the woodland garden. Also known as Oyama Magnolia, this small-statured plant is a natural for shaded courtyards and small scale landscapes that don’t afford room for a larger tree. Mature height and spread are approximately fifteen feet.

Siebold’s Magnolia performs best in USDA Zones 6 to 8. Thanks to its outstanding performance in gardens of the maritime climates of the Pacific Northwest, it was recently named a Great Plant Pick by the Elizabeth C. Miller Botanical Garden.
