At a time when the Hollywood film studios are jockeying for position in the race to spend the most money in promoting their films for the coveted golden Oscar, botanical gardens and nursery associations are recognizing great performers in the garden world.

Granted, the Great Plant Picks, the Cary Awards, the Pennsylvania Gold Medal Awards and others don’t generate the media hype or coverage that surrounds Oscar night, but they do catch the attention of an alert gardening public that is hungry for good ideas and sound advice.

Each of these programs supports retail nurseries by recommending plants that perform well in their respective regions – the maritime Pacific Northwest, New England and mid-Atlantic states. All three programs also maintain informational websites that are rich with photos and descriptive information, as well as lists of retail and wholesale nurseries where the plants may be purchased.

The Great Plant Picks program produces a colorful poster as well as information sheets on each plant that are available as PDF files on their website.
