Purple Prince Crabapple (Malus ‘Purple Prince’ PP 8478) sports carmine-red buds that unfurl to become rose red flowers. These are followed by deep purple, disease-resistant foliage that maintains its dark color better than most purple-foliaged selections. It closely resembles Prairifire Crabapple, but is faster growing and therefore may well be the best purple-foliaged cultivar for growers. It is also cited by Dr. Dale Herman of North Dakota State University for its excellent disease resistance and Zone 3.5 hardiness. Deep purple fruits are abundant and persistent.
Strawberry Parfait Crabapple (Malus ‘Strawberry Parfait’) is as yummy looking as its name implies. A profusion of large, long lasting pink flowers are rimmed with a darker pink margin, giving a showy, two-tone effect. Reddish-purple spring foliage matures to rich deep bronzy-green. Deep red fruits persist into winter.
Cardinal Crabapple (Malus ‘Cardinal’) fruits are deep red in color, in keeping with its rich purple leaf color that holds well through the summer. Deep magenta-pink flowers and good to excellent disease resistance make this cultivar the best of the purple-leaved cultivars.
Royal Raindrops® Crabapple (Malus ‘JFS-KW5’) blooms are bright pinkish red, and offset by purple-tinted leaves that intensify to purple and become deeply lobed as they mature. In fall, the cutleaf, deeply lobed foliage turns orange, in bright contrast to its tiny, bright red, persistent fruits. Upright, spreading form and dense branching habit are other attributes, not to mention the way its beautiful blossoms embellish a springtime dessert baked in honor of National Cheesecake Day.
