The Manual of Woody Landscape Plants came alive on August 27 when author and plant expert Dr. Michael Dirr guided guests through the J. Frank Schmidt, Jr. Arboretum. Billed as the “Walk of Legends,” the tour was led by Dirr and Keith Warren, JFS Director of Product Development.
Arguably the Siskel and Ebert of the tree world, the duo shared their collective knowledge of dozens of trees as they commented, compared notes, agreed, disagreed and entertained. Ever the teacher, Dirr called on guests, handing them the microphone and asking them to share their experiences with growing the various trees in their nurseries and landscapes across the continent.
Trailed on a winding route through the arboretum by more than 125 tree enthusiasts, Dirr and Warren discussed the merits of many of the new introductions planted in the arboretum in recent years. The A to Z tree tour, specially arranged for Schmidt customers attending the Farwest Show, began with Acer rubrum Redpointe® Maple and ended at Zelkova serrata City Sprite® Zelkova - This petite new addition to our UtiliTrees® product line was conveniently located near the bar where we raised a toast to trees.
After introductions of Schmidt family, staff and special guests, dinner was served. Tree talk, bluegrass music, a campfire and s’mores capped a fun evening that was unquestionably “two thumbs up.”
