Trident Maple
(Acer buergeranum)
Brilliant fall color, glossy foliage and exfoliating bark are three reasons to enjoy Trident Maple. Trident-shaped leaves emerge a rich bronzy-purple and mature to a glossy green. Bright fall colors include orange, red and yellow. This small tree grows to about 25-30 feet in height. Rated hardy to USDA Zone 5, it suffers no serious disease or insect problems.

Trident Maple is tolerant of drought and wind, soil compaction, salt and air pollution. Its adaptability makes it a good choice for street tree plantings where space is restricted. J.D. Vertrees reports that Trident Maple "has been used in many countries for boulevard planting since it adapts well to semi-drought conditions, air pollution from traffic, and has good structural strength." (Japanese Maples, Second Edition, 1987 Timber Press)
Recognized for its outstanding performance in the East, as well, Trident Maple earned a Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Gold Medal in 2000.
