Ornamental crabapples strut their stuff in autumn, when jewel-like fruits appear among the leaves and linger long into the winter months. By choosing from the wide array of disease-resistant, small-fruited cultivars, tree specifiers and gardeners can count on ornamental crabapples to provide a multi-season show of flower, fruit and fall color. Six carefree ornamental crabapples are named Great Plant Picks by the Elizabeth Miller Garden of Seattle. Two Schmidt introductions feature uniquely shaped, deeply cut foliage with handsome fall color, plus tiny, colorful and persistent fruits.

Golden Raindrops® Crabapple (Malus transitoria ‘Schmidtcutleaf’) branches are heavily laden with delicate, star-like, single white blossoms in late spring. These are transformed into a sparkling show of tiny golden yellow, persistent fruits that hang from its branches like golden raindrops. The vase shaped form is elegant, with slender limbs spreading horizontally from upright branches. Resistance to Scab, Cedar-Apple Rust and Mildew are excellent. Susceptibility to Fireblight limits its use in areas where the disease is prevalent, but excellent resistance to Scab, Cedar-Apple Rust and Mildew make it an excellent choice for use in the maritime regions of the Pacific Northwest and other areas where the aforementioned diseases are prevalent. Cedar waxwings, robins and other birds relish the fruits.

Royal Raindrops™ Crabapple (Malus ‘JFS-KW5’) is an exciting new crabapple that sports bright pinkish red flowers and deep purple cutleaf foliage. Fall color is orange-red, and its tiny bright red fruits are persistent. This offspring of Golden Raindrops® Crabapple has an upright spreading shape and displays good to excellent resistance to the common apple diseases including fireblight.
