Think of dogwoods and an array of beautiful blooms immediately comes to mind. We admire the colorful bracts of white, pink or red that adorn the branches of this handsome garden tree in spring. We tend to forget about the species for the rest of the year.

But wait! Fall color choices abound in the dogwood family. North American and Asian species as well as some of the hybrid crosses reward gardeners with a rainbow of color. Two selections of the North American native species, Cornus florida, are especially colorful in the fall due to their variegated leaves which are colorful throughout the growing season.

Cherokee Daybreak™ Dogwood (P.P. No.6320) blooms are composed of large white bracts. Its handsome variegated green leaves are edged with creamy white, holding their color through the heat of summer without scorching. Fall foliage is deep red to purple, edged with rich pink. Hardiness is USDA Zone 6. Cherokee Sunset™ Dogwood (Cornus florida ‘Sunset’ P.P. No. 6305) is the only variegated dogwood with red flower bracts. Pink-tipped new growth matures to a colorful combination of green and yellow, turning in the fall to a bright combination of pink, reds and purple. Hardiness is USDA Zone 6.

Chinese Dogwood (Cornus kousa) can be quite remarkable, a kaleidoscope of tones spanning a wide color range of red, yellow, purple and orange. Fall foliage of Milky Way Select Dogwood, an outstanding cultivar of this adaptable dogwood, is pictured.
